LEARN THE MEMOIR ENGINEERING SYSTEM

Make Your First Draft Your Final Draft

If you're struggling to write your memoir, it's probably because you haven't yet developed the skills you need. It's kind of like trying to play the trumpet by trial and error. You might get there one day, but if you want to speed up the process, it's a good idea to learn what buttons play which notes. Otherwise, you're going to be randomly pushing buttons for a very long time.

Fifteen years ago, I used to edit memoirs. It was a long grueling process for both me and the writer as we went back and forth with multiple rounds of changes. Then I realized that it would save everyone a whole lot of time if I started teaching people to get their book right on the very first draft. Join me for my four-hour masterclass and I will show you too.

THE MEMOIR ENGINEERING SYSTEM

How it works

Define your chapters

Your chapters are your chronological building blocks and work to keep your plot moving forward.

Turn events into scenes

Any time something happens in your book, your reader wants to live through it with you in the form of a scene.

Make a point in your transitions

To make one scene relevant to the next, you need to make a point.

Craft your book's ending

Use your inner search to create a fulfilling, non-predictable ending.

Escape the time-consuming process of writing draft after draft

What former students say

"Wendy is the best instructor I've had, bar none. She continually pushes you and never lets you settle for good enough. She is knowledgeable, patient, helpful, and has an excellent sense of humor! I would take a class again with her any time."  —Sandra Carpenter

"Wendy is phenomenal! I've taken dozens of writing courses and completed an MFA in creative writing. Never have I received such useful instruction. I'm happy that I'll be starting her advanced course next week." —Mary Rowland

"Taking Wendy Dale’s class on structure was the best decision I’ve ever made when it comes to learning my craft. Excellent in every way, I highly recommend this course for those who are serious about writing a memoir." —Cathee Poulsen

"This class has been the best investment in terms of time and money. Wendy truly cares about your story and guides you every step of the way." —Tanya Whitehead

"I spent a long time searching for a memoir writing teacher. There are many memoir teachers out there but no one like Wendy. Wendy invests herself into your story and the best way to make it work. After two years of struggling alone with writing my memoir, my book finally has a structure. I would NOT want to write my book without Wendy." —Cathy Skipper

"I was fortunate to work with Wendy during the early stages of my memoir when I was struggling when I lacked the confidence to continue. She helped me immeasurably by guiding me through the writing process with insight and kindness. Thanks to Wendy, I went on to complete my memoir and find a publisher."  —Jill Stegman
